Mission Statement & Minutes of Inaugural General Meeting (May 17, 1996)
Mission Statement

Since its foundation in 1956, the Korean Society of Anesthesiologists has made rapid progress in a short period of time. The current successful operation of a large number of surgical technologies is partly attributable to the progress made by KSA. Moreover, anesthesia itself has made significant contributions, both directly and indirectly, to the improvement of national health.

However, the administration of intravenous anesthetics cannot be done with just clinical knowledge on inhalation anesthesia, but requires additional education and training. Intravenous Anesthesia covers a variety of fields: 1) Pharmacokinetics & pharmacodynamics, 2) computer-aided drug delivery, 3) sedation, 4) understanding of muscle relaxants & vasoactive agents, 5) IV-PCA (intravenous patient controlled analgesia) skills and understanding of drugs, 6) understanding of drug interferences in anesthesia and 7) use and development of monitoring devices of anesthesia depth.

This is a field that extends beyond education and knowledge on computers, monitoring systems, installation and control of drug delivery systems as well as clinical knowledge that only a new research society can cover. For this reason, KSAP is taking the initiative to cover such diverse aspects of intravenous anesthesia. Our Society was founded with the aim of contributing to public health and academic development by accepting and disseminating new trends in the field of anesthesia.

As we are about to begin a new era of intravenous anesthesia, we expect to see remarkable progress in this field with the application of new drugs, computerization of medical administration and integration with clinical pharmacology. With the establishment of the Society, the scope of intravenous anesthesia will be expanded to cover not only anesthetic techniques but also sedation, pain control and critical care nursing. Reasonable medication administration will maximize benefits to cost and this will serve as a best option to achieve the two goals of improving the quality of healthcare and reducing medical expenses.
